2015 CPU Student Summer Internship

In order to know the latest need and current conducts of internship units in nowadays society, students are sent to Maritime Patrol Directorate General Coast Guard Administration of Executive Yuan, Agency of Corrections Ministry of Justice, National Police Agency Ministry of the Interior, National Fire Agency and National Immigration Agency. The goal of this summer internship is for students to acquire real-life training in practical units.
The internship program consists of two phases: the first phase is after the sophomore year. Students are trained by a group of professional and well-experienced officers on a daily basis. The second phase is after the end of junior year; students continue train to be a future lieutenant, or some duties with the same importance.
15 departments and 700 students has participated in this year’s internship, which starts from June 30th to August 13th, total of 45 days (60 days for students of Fire Science Department). Its content varies from different needs of different practical units. For example, the students in Administrative Department conduct public service, census check, promotion of women and children, traffic control, patrolling, pull over, interrogation, and criminal detection. Students in Maritime Police Department patrol over Taiwan’s territorial waters on vessels of Coast Guard Administration, precede fishing protection, fishing boat inspection, search and rescue. Trainings of Fire Science Department include putting out fire, emergency rescue, mountain rescue, river rescue, applications of knot tying and helicopter vertical rescue. Students of Crime Prevention and Corrections Department learn the operation of crime prevention duties in the jails and detention centers, such as rehabilitation methods, prison enlightenment and counseling services. Lastly, the Department of Board Police sends students to airports to learn how to perform passport control, manage foreign population, investigate illegal migrants and deal with the duties of foreigners stay, extension stay, permanent residence and re-entry examination.
At the end of the internship, students claimed they had learned a lot from the summer internship and got deeper understandings of future works. A sophomore student, Li Yu, said that once, he saw an aged woman walking under the sun on her way back to her house while he was patrolling. He gave her a ride back home because he was worried that she might be exposed to danger due to fatigue. From this incident, Li Yu learned that, apart from traffic enforcement and criminal arrest, the act of helping people might receive more appreciation from the public. Another junior student, Lin Zhi Jing, shared his participation in the activity of crime prevention in the juvenile police squad of Taipei Police Department. He felt such activity can help the public and children understand the acts of crime prevention.
President Chien-sheng, Tiao frequently paid visits to students in their internship units. He wanted to understand their intern conditions and encourage them to experience and to foresee their working environment for future works. In addition, they can get acquainted with the operation of professional equipment, current circumstances of the duties in practical units and to experience the operation model of interior management in leadership. After the internship, all students can make a good use of their time at school and make progress for themselves by adjusting learning objects or filling up their deficiency so as to be able to react to the challenges of future works.
